Performance is the share of the theoretical maximum rate you actually achieved while the asset was running. It captures speed loss: minor stops, reduced feed rates, an operator running the line below its rated speed.

Ideal cycle time and run time must be in the same unit of time. Mixing minutes and hours is the most common way this calculation goes wrong.

A performance figure above 100% means the ideal cycle time is wrong, not that the asset beat physics. Re-derive it from the nameplate rating or the fastest sustained run you can evidence.

How to calculate Performance rate

Performance = (Ideal cycle time × Total units) ÷ Run time × 100

  • Total units produced 15,000 units
  • Run time 8,400 min

Performance rate questions

Why is my performance rate over 100%?

The ideal cycle time is too slow. It should be the fastest rate the asset is capable of, not the rate you normally plan around or the standard in the routing. Anything above 100% means the benchmark drifted, and it will quietly inflate your OEE until you fix it.

What is the difference between performance rate and efficiency?

They are often used interchangeably, which is why the formula matters more than the label. This one compares actual output against the theoretical maximum for the time the asset was running. Some plants use "efficiency" for output against a planned target instead, which is a softer number because the target already has loss built into it.

Should short stops be counted here or under availability?

Under performance, by convention, when they are too brief to be logged as downtime, such as a jam cleared in thirty seconds. That is why performance is sometimes the only place minor stoppage loss shows up at all.
