Reflecting on 2020

2020 has arguably been one of the most unpredictable and challenging years in recent history, bringing a series of unprecedented disasters and tragedies, namely the COVID-19 pandemic. This time last year, concepts like "lockdowns", "social distancing", and "stay-at-home mandates" were unknown to most of us. And now, they are a part of our everyday language, and words we have heard constantly throughout this past year.

But in the midst of the tragedies, there were sacrificial and selfless individuals rising up all over the world to spread courage, compassion, positive change, and above all, hope. Specifically, we want to recognize a group of people who have been working behind the scenes and on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic,  to keeping their communities and cities safe — maintenance and facilities workers.

At UpKeep, we know maintenance and facilities workers have long been the people responsible for sustaining all facets of our society’s essential needs. The work done by those in this industry makes a huge impact on everyone's lives, every single day, whether they have been aware of it or not. And that’s never been more apparent than now as these professionals continue to work through these uncertain times.

The pandemic has also brought upon us a period of extended social isolation and physical distancing. And with this, the world has been experiencing a brutal acceleration of moving everything to digital. More than ever, people are looking for a ways to connect and places to have social interactions.

Understanding that there was a necessary call to action to bring people together, especially for those in our industry, UpKeep formed an entire department completely dedicated to building, from the ground up, an online community for maintenance and reliability professionals. The vision was to create a central resource for industry professionals to have conversations, share helpful tools, expand their knowledge, and feel supported, totally free and all in real-time! This also would unlock a new opportunity for maintenance experts to impart their expertise with those who are eager to learn and grow. And thus, The Maintenance Community Slack Group was born!

Where We're at Now

Currently, The Maintenance Community Slack Group has over 3,000 members in all different time zones, engaging with each other in discussions and free webinars surrounding maintenance and reliability. Here are some stats to show how much we have grown in the span of just a few months!

There's a lot of things these statistics show. But, if there's just one thing we've learned, it's that this online community is resonating with people in our industry. It is fulfilling UpKeep's mission in empowering maintenance and facilities workers, as well as our Community Team's vision in creating a central resource.

This is the first ever community of its kind for maintenance and reliability professionals. There's no ulterior motives, no advertisement about UpKeep, we just simply want to give back to an industry that has given so much to the world. And, as a tech startup, we also want to offer technology as a solution to the isolation caused by the pandemic for maintenance workers, allowing for important recognition and appreciation of the invaluable and essential work that they do.

This community is helping thousands of individuals from all different walks of life, timezones, and job roles connect with each other. This community is acting like a support group that is willing to share knowledge, acquire valuable feedback, and simply hear each others' voices. And, this community continues to encourage diverse perspectives, congregate people who have tons of experience and young professionals who are just starting out in the maintenance space, and allow for conversation to be more fluid and inclusive.

The crazy thing is, we're just getting started.
