I was born and raised in the Philippines and I moved to California when I was 8 years old. I spent most of my childhood playing basketball, reading books, or learning all kinds of instruments. In college, I discovered I had a passion for problem solving and being creative through designing and coding and decided to pursue a career in Software Engineering. After living in SF for 5 years, I wanted a change of scenery from the fog and gloom and I moved to sunny LA after graduating. That was about 3 years ago and I’m still lovin’ it here!
I actually came into college for Pre-Med with the intention of becoming a pediatrician but during my sophomore year, I needed to fulfill the minimum units requirement for FAFSA and I picked an intro to Computer Science class because it was one of the only classes with seats left. I changed my major that same day. I just loved that I could use both sides of my brain all the time, solving problems analytically and creatively.
UpKeep has a mission that I could really get behind. I have family members working in manufacturing: my sister is in biotech manufacturing, my brother is in salt production, and my dad is in electromechanical assembly. So I thought it would be awesome to be able to make a direct impact and cater to these hard working and underserved groups of people. I also love that UpKeep fosters an open, collaborative environment with diverse groups of individuals who work together to bring ideas to life and push boundaries to help make other people’s lives better.
I love the energy, especially during these times where we can easily be disconnected from one another. There’s so much passion and genuineness towards each other and the company as a whole to do better and really make a difference in the world. It’s quite infectious and it makes waking up and going to work more meaningful and exciting.
It was truly one of the best experiences in my life. We were in Iceland for a week but we didn’t see them the first couple of nights so we had to do a bit of chasing and drive out to get away from light pollution. It was finally on full display on the third night. My Iceland travel tip is to come during wintertime to have a better chance of seeing the Northern Lights for sure, but also come back in the summertime to fully explore the highlands. Iceland’s landscape is just something else.
If I was a kitchen utensil, I think I would be an Instant Pot because they are just so versatile and multi-purpose which is what I try to be as a person and as an Engineer.
