Making sure society runs smoothly isn’t easy, which is why it’s no understatement to say that those involved in maintenance and reliability are a society of heroes. That said, some individuals stand out because of their contributions to the profession, whether that’s through books, conferences, online leadership contributions, or other methods. Their contributions help reliability professionals all over the world improve both their craft and the facilities where they work, and they deserve recognition.

Over the past month, we've highlighted many individuals in the maintenance and reliability field. These individuals were chosen based on a combination of maintenance community input, and the kinds of contributions they’ve made to the improvement of professionals. Everyone is listed in alphabetical order, and this fourth and final article in the series highlights those with last names S-Z.

Fred Schenkelberg

In 2004, Fred Schenkelberg founded FMS Reliability, a reliability engineering and management consulting firm. He is also a reliability consultant for Product Realization Group, a graduate course lecturer at the University of Maryland, a producer/website manager at Accendo Reliability, and author of two books: Finding Value: How to Determine the Value of Reliability in Engineering Activities and Reliability Maturity: Understand and Improve Your Reliability Engineering Program . As a consultant, Fred helps clients choose reliability tools, make reliability estimates, perform testing, and improve engagement. 

Jeff Shiver

Founder of People and Processes, Inc.

Jeff Shiver helps companies overcome the difficulties they have with maintenance and reliability issues. His company—People and Processes—partners with facilities, manufacturers, municipalities, and government bodies in order to provide consulting and educational services. Over the course of his career, Jeff has held virtually every position imaginable in maintenance, giving him substantial experience in maintenance and reliability. He has also written various articles for Plant Services and the People and Processes website and co-authored a book titled Kitting in Maintenance Made Simple.

Jeff Smith

Jeff Smith is a Certified Reliability Leader Black Belt as well as a CMRP and SME. For a time, Jeff was the Senior Reliability Leader at Reliabilityweb.com, a widely known online resource for maintenance and reliability professionals, as well as the Technical Editor of Uptime Magazine. Professionally, Jeff is a student of reliability and is currently exploring operational readiness. His company is 4Tg industrial.

LaWayne Smith

Head of Asset Management and Reliability at the University of Kansas Medical Center

In his position as the Head of Asset Management and Reliability at KU Medical Center, LaWayne Smith performs planned maintenance optimization, FMEA, and RCFA. LaWayne is certified as a CRL and CMRP, and he has a degree in Maintenance and Production Management from the Community College of the Air Force. Over his short time in maintenance and reliability, he has already made a big impact in his role in asset management—in part through his appearance in a number of podcasts.

Ricky Smith

Maintenance Expert in Residence at UpKeep

Ricky Smith has been in the maintenance and reliability industry since 1972 when he joined the U.S. Army as a mechanic, and his many years of experience have taken him through numerous roles in the industry. Most recently, he was Vice President of World Class Maintenance before joining UpKeep as a Maintenance Expert in Residence. JD Solomon

After over 17 years at CH2M (now Jacobs) as a practice leader, JD Solomon now acts as the senior consultant at J.D. Solomon, Inc. and specializes in facilitation, asset management, and program development for organizations. JD was also formerly the Chairman of the North Carolina Environmental Management Commission. As a CMRP, CRE, and Six Sigma Black Belt, JD shares his expertise in his book Communicating Reliability, Risk and Resiliency to Decision Makers .

Shadrach Stephens

Shadrach Stephens has worked in many different teams over the course of his career, and with them has generated tens of millions of dollars in value for various companies. His current role as a Global Improvement and Reliability Director has him overseeing $6 billion worth of assets worldwide. Shadrach has received a number of recognitions, including the Engineering Leaders <40 Award by Plant Engineering. In addition, he is published in various publications, including Control Engineering, Automation World, and Maintenance Technology.

Adam Stredel

Adam Stredel’s position at LUDECA involves presenting on maintenance and reliability topics as well as demonstrating the use of alignment and geometric measurement systems. He has presented at over 50 different seminars, each of which having high levels of attendance. Usman Mustafa Syed

Usman Mustafa Syed is a CMM and CRL with experience in maintenance, reliability, and asset management. Jason Tranter

Ever since 1984, Jason Tranter has been involved in reliability, condition monitoring, and vibration analysis, and in 1999, he and his wife founded Mobius Institute. Through their organization, they provide computer-based training resources and certification to reliability professionals. Drew Troyer
