How is virtual reality changing the future of education?

Virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) technologies expose students to more low-cost, hands-on experiences in a wide variety of fields. We're already seeing changes in how students learn through these mediums. VR and AR have the potential for an even greater impact on the future of educational programs.

Vocational Education

Augmented reality technology has already made headway into various vocational educational programs. These programs, are by their nature, hands-on and focus on a variety of trades. Students may earn a certificate or degree. Many are already in the workplace and working toward a promotion or career advancement through additional vocational training.

Virtual reality allows classroom training to be more complete. For example, a student studying to be an auto mechanic can begin working on a virtual car without leaving the classroom. Student welders, machinists, health care assistants, and maintenance technicians can all learn skills critical to their trades in the classroom first—without the expensive equipment and the safety risks that come with working on actual machinery.

Virtual Trips

Much can be learned through field trips or traveling to different cities, states, or countries. Currently, very few students obtain this type of educational experience. Virtual field trips are currently being created, giving students the opportunity to travel all over the world, into outer space, and even back in time.

Special Education

Students with learning disabilities or other disabilities can often benefit from virtual or augmented reality technology. For example, autistic students can use the technology to facilitate a wide range of therapeutic exercises.

Supplementary Education

Virtual and augmented reality technologies can never replace an excellent teacher, a caring mentor, or a classroom experience. However, it can provide a great deal of supplementary experiences to help solidify, reinforce and encourage learning.

In some cases, it can be used to help bring students at a disadvantage to get on par with peers. In other cases, virtual and augmented reality technology can provide that extra challenge for the gifted student who understands the basics of the current lesson.
