Your asset and equipment data doesn't belong in a silo. UpKeep makes it simple to see where everything stands, all in one place. That means less guesswork and more time to focus on what matters.
The top reliability engineering certifications are certified maintenance and reliability professional, certified reliability engineer, certified reliability leader, and asset reliability practitioner. Professional certifications help reliability-centered maintenance professionals increase their training and education, as well as ready themselves for promotions within their careers.
Certified Maintenance & Reliability Professional (CMRP)
Granted by the Society of Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP), the CMRP trains and evaluates professionals on business and management, manufacturing process reliability, equipment reliability, organization and leadership, and work management.
Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE)
The CRE designation is granted through the ASQ, an organization committed to providing enhanced expertise, professional networks, tools, and solutions for its members. In order to achieve a CRE, a professional must “learn and master design review and control; prediction, estimation, and apportionment methodology; failure mode effects and analysis; the planning, operation and analysis of reliability testing and field failures, including mathematical modeling; understanding human factors in reliability; and the ability to develop and administer reliability information systems for failure analysis, design and performance improvement and reliability program management over the entire product life cycle.”
Professionals must be working in a full-time, paid position and have at least eight years of experience in a related area. Three years must be completed in a position that requires related decision-making for a business.
Certified Reliability Leader (CRL)
The Association of Asset Management Professionals (AMP) has created an exam and certification based on a body of knowledge that focuses on reliability designed to result in economic prosperity, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility.
Candidates will study and be tested on reliability engineering for maintenance, asset condition management, work execution management, reliability leadership, and asset management.
Asset Reliability Practitioner
The asset reliability practitioner certification, sponsored by the Mobius Institute, encompasses a review of reliability philosophy and culture, reliability strategy, reliability audits, leadership, and leadership audits. Two independent committees, made up of experienced consultants, educators, and reliability professionals, created the program and the exams. Candidates are evaluated by an independently accredited board.
What are some lubrication & oil analysis certifications?
The International Council for Machinery Lubrication offers nine different levels of certification for lubrication and oil analysis while the Society for Tribology & Lubrication Engineers has four programs. Maintenance technicians, managers and other professionals desiring to deepen their knowledge in lubrication and oil analysis would benefit from these training and certification programs.
International Council for Machinery Lubrication
The International Council for Machinery Lubrication offers nine levels of certification encompassing four different areas of responsibility.
Three levels are available for machine lubricant analysts, which are geared for in-plant technicians who work on a daily basis with lubrication tasks. The first level focuses on basic machine condition monitoring while the second addresses these tasks as they relate to sample testing, management, and diagnosis. The final level discusses management-related responsibilities include test slate selection, setting alarm limits, and choosing software and diagnostic tools.
Laboratory lubrication analysts who analyze lubrication data and samples for machine condition monitoring can select from three levels of training as well. The initial level is designed for those technicians who follow established testing procedures, while the second level targets those technicians with more experience in conducting the overall daily laboratory activities. The third level is again designed for supervisory or management levels where the focus is on training those who manage others and make decisions regarding systems, instruments, maintenance, and diagnostics.
Two levels of certification are available for machinery lubrication technicians. Technicians completing tasks like changing oil, greasing bearings, or disposing of lubricants would benefit from the first level of certification while those managing the lube team and troubleshooting daily tasks would grow from the second level.
Designed as an engineering-level, lubrication-focused certification for reliability and asset management professionals, the machinery lubrication engineer program is specially designed to help management guide their companies to achieve the company-wide ICML 55 certification as a tactical step towards ISO 55001 certification.
Society for Tribology & Lubrication Engineers (STLE)
The STLE offers four technical certification programs. Professionals can earn the titles of certified lubrication specialist, certified metalworking fluids specialist, and certified oil monitoring analyst I or II. Professionals are evaluated by a board using top certification practices.
