The different laws surrounding seatbelts on school buses vary by state and can be summed up into two main categories: states where seat belts are required by law and states where they are not. To date, only six states require seat belts. They are:
The exceptions to the general rule
Those are the states in which school buses must have seatbelts. However, they do have exceptions to the rules. One of these is that older school buses may not be required to have seatbelts. There are also weight restrictions; lighter buses are regulated by the federal government, while heavier buses are left up to the states’ individual regulations.
Why is this the case?
Why the general rule exists
School buses are some of the safest vehicles on the roads today. There is little need for the extra safety that belts would provide and valid concerns exist about installing seat belts. These concerns include the cost, the very small need, and the fact that children would probably not use them at all.
Different global perspectives
The global view is roughly the same as America. For example, Canada does not require seatbelts as a general rule, though if they are used, certain regulations must be followed. Hong Kong is considering the matter, though it should be noted that many of their business are used for other purposes.
Opinions vary, but they all revolve around one point: school buses are some of the safest vehicles on the roads today.
How to remain up-to-date and in compliance with the different laws
This all has long-term implications for these states’ school bus companies’ overall fleet maintenance strategy and most maintenance work that is done on school buses.
And the answer is to keep an eye on the rules. While the laws surrounding seatbelts may not change, other maintenance on buses must be kept up to date through routine maintenance to ensure that all parts and equipment are running in smooth order.
