We are so excited to chat with Jake Anderson, our Full Stack Engineers! Jake has already surpassed many milestones in his role, creating impactful work through UpKeep Edge in such a short amount of time.  He is an IoT guru and quick on his feet, always there to lend a helping hand when it comes to leveling up the product. Jake has the natural ability to kick-start so many projects within the Engineering department and has over-delivered on his objectives within his team! We're incredibly lucky to have Jake and his knowledge on the team! Here is his interview with our CEO, Ryan.

Ryan: What's up, Jake! Could you start us off by sharing what your role is at UpKeep, and some of your responsibilities?

Jake: I am a Full Stack software engineer working on UpKeep Edge, an advanced IoT technology that delivers real-time monitoring on your assets. Most of my day-to-day responsibilities involve the creation of new functionality within the Edge app and managing our cloud infrastructure. Right now we are beginning work on a new feature in Edge, that will allow our clients to draw new insights about their key assets using the data that we have already collected through our IoT platform. It is super exciting!

Ryan: How did you find out about UpKeep? And, what made you want to join the team?

Jake: I found myself looking for a new job using sites like LinkedIn and Indeed and I came across the posting for a Full Stack engineer with IoT focus at UpKeep. Ever since I learned to code I have been drawn to IoT, especially when it comes to any sort of environmental monitoring. So I had no option but to apply. I reached out to Tyler Blum via LinkedIn, we had a bit of back and forth initially, and a few months later, I got a call from him about the role. Within the first few minutes of chatting with Tyler, I knew UpKeep was something special and 100% needed to learn more about it.

There are so many factors that made me want to join the team, the incredible coworkers that I interviewed with like Gary, Jonathan, Camille, Justin, the vibrant culture, but most of all it was the opportunity to work with Mark McKelvy on Edge. Mark is an absolute powerhouse, and having the chance to work on this newly-minted IoT offering with him wasn’t something I could pass up.

Ryan: Currently, what’s a project you’ve been working on that you’re really proud of? Or, maybe a project you’ve already completed that you still think about?

Jake: As a software engineer the last project you completed always lives in your head for a while, because of bugs and there are always inevitable tweaks that will need to happen down the road.

But what comes to mind though is the work that I did on the meters integration. Meters is a feature within UpKeep that allows our clients to track quantitative measurements that relate to an asset. So an example could be that a technician would go and measure the AC current generated by a given piece of equipment and enter that reading into Meters. This way clients can establish trends but also trigger work orders when readings are outside of a user-defined range. So the work that we did was to pipe that data that we are already gaining in Edge directly to Meters.

The reason that I am so proud of this work is that hopefully, we are giving some technicians additional time to focus, get ahead of problems before they become significant, and most of all have more time outside of work to do what they love. For me personally, It was an amazing chance to work with team members and code-bases that I don’t normally work with.

Ryan: What’s something you love about UpKeep?

Jake: That is not an easy question to answer because there are so many, but if I had to pick one, I would say I really appreciate how the UpKeep Team embodies the core value of “Progress over Perfection”. “Progress over Perfection” is kind of baked into the iterative nature of software development, that’s what we do with versions and patches. I get super excited when I see that approach of incremental and measured improvement in things that the HR, Customer Success, and Leadership team does. That and our Slack channel #club-pupkeep. Apparently, most of everyone’s dogs are just as goofy as mine.

Ryan: Awesome, thanks again, Jake, for joining me in this episode of Life at UpKeep!
